Throughout history, titles have been important. They're usually the first thing that "grabs" us when we're looking at things. This means that your title needs to be snappy enough to convey the essence of the page on your website.
If your title is too long (more than 65 characters in total), the search engines will cut it off. If your title is irrelevant to the search that was carried out but your page is considered relevant then the search engines are often using their resources to write what they consider to be a better title.

There are a number of other factors that serve to back-up the promise made in the page title. These include the headlines on your page, the actual content of the page and the pictures (if any) displayed.
All of these factors should be as natural as possible and your page should primarily be aimed at the real humans visiting your site rather than the robots sent out by the search engines.
